5/03 。GRE類比

也太多冷門字，eg. epistemology(哲學上的認識論)…我連查兩本字典居然都查不到，連我的Collins Colbuild (Advanced Learner's)也不見其蹤影。
幸好這世界有種東西叫網路，果然天無絕人之路
還讓我發明GRE Wiki背法...

TEST 1：chimerical : authenticity = melodrama : subtlety

查詢chimerical，得到：
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chimerical

該字Wiki重定向到：
Chimera，某種希臘神話裡噴火的四不像怪物；
有圖有真相。

description的倒數第二段說：
In Medieval art, though the Chimera of Antiquity was forgotten,chimerical figures appear as embodiments of the deceptive,even Satanic forces of raw nature.

這種欺騙的怪物自然缺乏authenticity (可信賴性)啦。


查詢melodrama，得到：
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melodrama
wiki解釋說melodrama = melody + drama，
而且該劇是用音樂來描述每個人物的種類。

第一段下半段說：
While the use of music is nearly ubiquitous in modern film,in a melodrama these musical cues will be used within a fairly rigid structure, and the characterizations will accordingly be somewhat more one-dimensional: Heroes will be unambiguously good and their entrance will be heralded by heroic-sounding trumpets and martial music;
villains are unambiguously bad, and their entrance is greeted with dark-sounding, ominous chords.

從這段，你就看得出來這種音樂劇「單純」的地方：好人總是好，壞人就是壞。
這種二分法的戲劇，當然就是缺乏subtlety(細微)囉！

TEST2：voluble : terse = maladroit : deft

在google上搜尋voluble wiki得到：
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/voluble
第一個定義是：fluent or having a ready flow of speech

而terse wiki則得到：
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/terse
第一個定義則是：(of speech or style) Brief, concise, to the point.
例句是：He gave a terse, one-word answer.

所以這是講話上的一長一短。

在google上搜尋deft wiki得到：
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/deft
第一個定義是：Quick and neat in action; skillful
例句則是：He assembled it in one fluid, deft motion.

而maladroit wiki則得到：
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maladroit
第一句話就是Maladroit (...meaning either inept or an inept person)
所以一個是quick and neat，一個是inept，一個是敏捷/聰穎，另一個是笨拙。

如果有時間的話，還可以看看wiktionary關於字源的Etymology，甚至欣賞一下哪個band的第四張專輯就是叫做maladroit，不過那些就算是娛樂了。

不需要紅寶綠寶書了吧。查完wiki就背起來囉，還可以順便練閱讀。:-)
